FIVE suspects were tagged in the killing of a priest in Nueva Ecija, police said on Wednesday morning.
Chief Supt. Amador Corpus, Central Luzon regional director, told a press briefing that the suspects were seen on CCTV, one of whom was identified, in the killing of Fr. Richmond Nilo.
“We have the name of one of the suspects and his identity is being confirmed. Again, we are conducting follow up operations and we need to confirm his identity first,” said Corpus, referring to the evidence being gathered by the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) “Nilo.”
Corpus said that two of the suspects were in a getaway car while three followed Fr. Nilo until he reached the chapel where he was about to celebrate mass.
Police have yet to establish the motive behind the killing but Corpus said that Fr. Nilo’s involvement in various issues could have led to his death.
“The first is the victim’s involvement and participation in land dispute issues in the province of Nueva Ecija and the second one is his active role supporting rape victims, molested children and filing cases against the suspects. And the third issue is the victim is a staunch critic of other religious sector because of his belief,” Corpus said.
Fr. Nilo was killed inside a chapel on June 10, the second from Nueva Ecija and the third from the Catholic Church over six months.
Fr. Mark Ventura was killed in Cagayan Province on April 29 and Fr. Marcelito Paez in Jaen, Nueva Ecija on Dec. 4, 2017. ROY NARRA
