GlobalPort bucks White’s 4th quarter absence, upsets SMB

GlobalPort overcame the absence of import Malcolm White in the fourth quarter to upset defending champion San Miguel Beer, 98-94, in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 43 Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

“The absence of our import Malcolm White really motivated us. It turned out to be positive then the other players provided energy for the team,” said GlobalPort coach Pido Jarencio. “This is a big win for us especially going to the playoffs. At least now, we have a big chance to the quarterfinals.”

White, who was ejected in the game after receiving his second technical foul, poured in 25 points and 10 rebounds while Stanley Pringle made 17 of his 22 points in the last period on top of eight assists and seven rebounds to lead the Batang Pier.

Sean Anthony contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists also for the Batang Pier.

Renaldo Balkman scored 33 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Beermen but failed to sustain the team’s three-game winning streak and drop to 3-4 win-loss record.

Rookie Christian Standhardinger returned to action for the Beermen after missing two games due to swollen knee. He was scoreless though in 11 minutes of play.
