DA boosts farm outputs in tribe lands
November 02, 2018
The Department of Agriculture (DA) is gearing up to uplift the livelihoods of the B’laan tribe of Davao del Sur by developing a model farm in Matanao town to contribute to the agricultural productivity of the region. The DA will construct farm-to-market roads and establish market linkages in the Matanao under its Kabuhayan at Kaunlaran ng Kababayang Katutubo (4Ks) program, a livelihood and agricultural productivity program for indigenous peoples (IP). In a recent dialogue with members of the B’laan tribe, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol vowed to deliver “immediate, medium and long-term solutions” that will benefit the lives of IPs in Matanao. The SAAD was directed to make a coordinating group for the establishment of a multiplier farm of native pigs to improve the livestock industry in the area. The DA will also provide seedlings of coffee, cacao, abaca and black pepper and will involve the IPs in planting fast-growing trees like falcata and gmelina, Piñol added.
