SULU SCHOOL RENAMED after SLAIN PRINCIPAL

November 02, 2018

JOLO, Sulu: The Department of Education (DepEd) central office in Pasig City made an unprecedented move recently when it changed the name of a Sulu rural elementary school to honor its Christian principal who was kidnapped and later killed by Abu Sayyaf bandits. A military source said Principal Gabriel K. Canizares, 37, was in a passenger jeepney bound for the school in Patikul town when heavily armed bandits stopped the vehicle along a rough road, pulled him out and shot him dead. The bandits then fled to a nearby forested area. A ranking Sulu Schools Division official, who asked not to be identified for security reasons, immediately dispatched an incident report to the DepEd Central Office’s Information Division. In a unanimous decision, the Kanague Elementary School was renamed the Gabriel K. Canizares Elementary School, the first time this was done in the country’s public school system.
