Defending champion Arellano University (AU) pulled off a strong finish after a sloppy opening set, as it downed University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 18-25, 25-16, 25-19, 26-24, on Thursday in the women’s division of the NCAA Season 94 volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan City.
Power-spiking Nicole Ebuen did most of the heavy lifting with a game-best of 18 points on top of 12 kills and four blocks. It was the Lady Chiefs’ eighth straight victory, one win short of completing an elimination round sweep that would push them straight to the best-of-three championship round.
But getting in AU’s way is it’s finals opponent last year, San Beda University, which is currently No. 2 with a 7-1 record.
Arellano, which is eyeing a third crown in row and fourth overall in the last five seasons, also drew solid effort from last year’s Finals Most Valuable Player Regine Anne Arocha, who contributed 11 points.
Cindy Imbo led Perpetual Help with13 points. The Lady Altas absorbed their third setback against four triumphs and a share of No. 4 with San Sebastian College-Recoletos.
Perpetual is looking to sweep its last two foes namely San Sebastian on Monday and Jose Rizal University (4-4) next week to make a Final Four return after missing the cut a year back.
In the lone women’s game earlier, Letran posted a 14-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-17, 15-13 win to improve to 2-6 against Mapua.
In the juniors’ side, Colegio de San Juan de Letran waylaid Mapua University, 25-18, 25-19, 25-22, to keep its hold of the third spot with a 6-2 card.
In men’s action, Letran smashed Mapua, 25-15, 25-22, 25-20, for its second win in eight outings.
