Tams stun Pirates for first win in FilOil

May 21, 2019

Far Eastern University (FEU) scored a breakthrough victory after stunning erstwhile unbeaten leader Lyceum of the Philippines University, 86-78, in the 2019 FilOil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup on Monday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

The Tamaraws raced to a furious start then foiled the Pirates’ late fightback for their first win following a two-loss start in Group B.

“We really played consistent basketball for 40 minutes,” said FEU head coach Olsen Racela.

Brandrey Bienes fired a team-high 14 points built on 4-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc to ignite the Morayta-based squad’s hot start.

Veteran guards Wendell Comboy, Alec Stockton and rookie swingman Cyrus Torres chipped in 13 points apiece in the win.

FEU buried 17 triples on an impressive 44% shooting clip against Lyceum’s six treys (33%).

Behind its fiery three-point shooting, FEU took a 30-17 lead early in the second quarter and extended it to 62-45 midway the third frame.

Lyceum threatened within 70-77 on Ralph Tansingco’s and-one play at the 3:50 mark of the payoff period.

But Comboy hit a dagger three-pointer and Patrick Tchuente sank a layup, 82-70, as the Tamaraws zapped the fight out of the Pirates.

Jaycee Marcelino had a game-best 17 points while Mike Nzeusseu and Tansingco had 14 and 13 markers, respectively, for the Pirates, who slid to 4-1.

Earlier in juniors play, University of Perpetual Help System DALTA stretched its Group B lead with its fourth straight win at the expense of debuting University of Sto. Tomas, 90-82.

Nazareth School of National University decimated Jose Rizal University, 85-66, for a second consecutive win also in Group B.

Mapua University (1-2) seized a breakthrough 73-69 triumph over the hapless Adamson University (0-3) in Group A.
