Blackwater targets the solo lead and the first quarterfinal slot when it takes on San Miguel Beer today in Season 44 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Elite (5-1 win-loss record) are now just a win away from securing a quarterfinal berth when they meet the winless Beermen (0-2) in their 4:30 p.m. encounter.
“We have to be ready for tomorrow’s game and we are not entertaining that kind of thought (bagging the first quarterfinals slot). We are taking things one practice and one game at a time. We are avoiding that. We’re doing very well right now,” Blackwater coach Aries Dimaunahan told The Manila Times.
Dimaunahan reminds his wards that San Miguel Beer has always been a formidable team.
“Against a powerhouse team, we must exercise extreme caution especially on the defensive end. Any San Miguel Beer player can score.”
Bobby Ray Parks is averaging 23.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists while import Alex Stepheson had 22.1 points and 22 rebounds in six games.
San Miguel Beer lost 88-121 to Northport and 97-110 to TNT last week.
“It’s a must win, winning must start now. We should have a sense of urgency,” said Beermen coach Leo Austria.
Four Beermen will miss tonight’s game.
Ronald Tubid and Kelly Nabong are out because of a two-game suspension imposed by the league for an infraction in their championship game with Magnolia on May 10.
Arwind Santos is nursing an injured thumb while Terrence Romeo is recuperating from an Achilles heel injury.
Meanwhile, Northern Luzon Expressway (NLEX) battles Magnolia (0-2) in the second game at 7 p.m.
NLEX, winless in five games, will field in Jericho Cruz while the Hotshots will try to end a two-game slide.
