This past weekend was intense in the world of showbiz with talks of privilege, shaming, breakups and third parties. The Manila Times Entertainment today runs down the stories that got fans and netizens alike talking about these hot topics.
Yeng Constantino and husband’s ‘traumatic experience’
During a vacation in Siargao, musician Yeng Constantino’s husband, Yan Asuncion, suffered short-term memory loss immediately after diving in the famous Sugba Lagoon.
The “Hawak Kamay” singer took to her vlog — video blog — and a Facebook post to explain the “traumatic experience” and what happened with medical personnel.
“After nung impact nagka-memory loss sya. Di nya maalala kung nasan kami, paano kami nakapunta sa Siargao at saan kami nagse-stay,” wrote Constantino on Facebook. “Ang pinakanakatakot [sic] para sakin nung tinanong na nya kung anong taon ngayon. Di nya maalala. Pinilit kong ikalma sarili ko.”
Constantino and their boatmen were able to call an ambulance right away. Asuncion was first brought to Del Carmen Hospital where the medical team gave him painkillers and a neck brace but were then advised to transfer to Dapa Siargao Hospital, as they had complete equipment.
Constantino was quick to express her dismay. “Nasa isip ko ‘bakit ganun? Sana meron din ditong equipments [sic] dahil malapit ‘to sa tourist attractions na [may] cliff diving at prone to accidents.’” She continued, “Pambihira! Yung dapat 1 1/2 hours na tinagal namin dun sa Dapa Siargao Hospital ay umabot ng 3 1/2 hours.”
The frustrated singer then listed her concerns as to why they had to wait and undergo the procedures for that long; how no one on the team knew how to operate the x-ray and the operator arriving only after two hours; that the emergency scanner for cases like brain hemorrhage was still in its box, they had to figure out how to operate it, and wait for it to finish charging.
However, the final reason that Constantino cited received the most backlash from netizens, which is the alleged lack of concern and sense of urgency of the medical team as well as the doctor present. Furthermore, Constantino named the doctor and pointed out that she was simply swinging her legs while reading the scanner manual. The singer then called on the government and tourism department to address the issue.
The comments against Constantino came as soon she uploaded the vlog and Facebook post, saying that she is coming from a high point of privilege.
A medical student with username @cesmsantos — who stated that she was with the doctor who assisted Asuncion — posted a thread on Twitter, explaining that the staff did their best to give proper care despite the lack of manpower and equipment.
The student tagged the post with #NoToDoctorShaming, which became a trending topic. Netizens also called out the singer for vlogging while at the hospital, showing her husband in pain as well as showing the faces of the medical personnel without permission. Moreover, Constantino’s vlog was monetized, hence, netizens alleged that the singer crossed the line just to earn money and to ruin careers.
As of press time, Constantino ‘s vlog is still up on her YouTube channel with more than 1 million views. She is also is yet to respond to the backlash.
Bea Alonzo’s viral messages
On Sunday, actress Bea Alonzo posted mysterious quotes on her Instagram account. She posted a black photo on her feed with the caption, “you can’t make the same mistake twice, the second time you make it, it’s not a mistake anymore, it’s a choice. Enough.”
This was then followed by a post on Instagram Stories, which read “Something I learned about people… If they do it once, they’ll do it again.” Alonzo did not give names but has deleted photos with boyfriend Gerald Anderson.
Following Alonzo’s posts, the names Gerald and Julia started trending on Twitter. Most recently, Anderson and Julia Barretto played love interests in the film “Between Maybes,” which received positive acclaim.
Alonzo and Anderson began their short romance in 2010 which was rekindled in 2016. Rumors circulated in 2018 that the couple has broken up but Alonzo stated that she gave Anderson a second chance.
Additionally, Barretto along with on- and off-screen boyfriend Joshua Garcia announced in an interview with ABS-CBN News in late June that they called it quits but remain best friends. In that same interview, Barretto was quick to dismiss the allegation that Anderson was the reason for the breakup.
However, photos of Anderson and Barretto attending a party hosted by Rayver Cruz circulated online, beginning rumors that the two are now a couple.
Due to the intense backlash, Barretto disabled comments on her Instagram account. On the other hand, Anderson has left the comments on his account open, where netizens continue to call him a “cheater,” saying that he “does not deserve Bea,” and calling the actor a “f***boy.”
Meanwhile, Julia’s mom, Marjorie Barretto, on Monday said that she plans to file a suit against those who spread “damaging” stories against her daughter as the photos that circulated online were “harmless.”
