They’re only starting out but young actresses Jillian Ward, Althea Ablan and Sofia Pablo are showbiz’ newest “Prima Donnas.” To be clear, though, the reference shouldn’t be taken literally. “Prima Donnas” is simply the title of their all new afternoon drama series, which premieres today on GMA Network.
As Donna Marie, Donna Belle and Donna Lyn, the sought-after teen stars, in fact, are a pleasure to work with according to director Gina Alajar and a star-studded cast — one of the country’s best kontrabidas Katrina Halili, dramatic actor Wendell Ramos, veteran and award-winning actress Chanda Romero, basketball legend and well-loved comedian and actor Benjie Paras, fast-rising teen star Elijah Alejo, and 2018 Metro Manila Film Festival and Gawad Pasado Awards 2019 Best Supporting Actress Aiko Melendez, with the special participation of Glaiza de Castro.
A heartwarming tale about family and sibling love, the series is centered on Ward, Ablan and Pablo’s characters whose bond as sisters is tested by a web of secrets, grudging relatives, and their ultimate pursuit to discover the truth about their identities.
“Prima Donnas” opens as married couple Jaime (Ramos) — the sole inheritor of an affluent group of companies — and his wife Maita (de Castro) find it difficult to bear a child. Desperate, they hire Lilian (Halili) — the daughter of their most trusted house helper — to be the surrogate mother of their unborn offspring. Lilian accepts the proposal and later on gives birth to three beautiful girls: kindhearted and driven Donna Marie, ambitious and strong-willed Donna Belle, and sweet and soft-spoken Donna Lyn who is the mediator between the two.
Life takes an unexpected turn for the three Donnas when Kendra (Melendez) — a top executive of their father’s birthright — begins scheming to get a hold of all of the family’s wealth and Jaime’s affection at their expense.
During the series’ media launch at the network’s headquarters, prized actress-turned-director Alajar said of the three teen headliners, “Mahuhusay silang umarte, and I like their attitude dahil nakikinig sila sa instructions ko kaya I hardly have any problems with them even in the most difficult scenes. Hindi ko kailangang paulit-ulit,” she shared.
“Prima Donnas” airs weekdays beginning this afternoon after “Dulo Ng Buhay Ko.”
