MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Tuesday expressed condolences over the death of Agriculture Undersecretary Deogracias Victor Savellano, whom he honored as “a true public servant.”
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Undersecretary Deogracias Victor ‘DV’ Savellano, a true public servant, a dear friend and someone whose heart always belonged to the people he served,” Marcos said in a statement.
“To his family and loved ones, I offer my sincerest condolences,” he added.
Marcos said Savellano will always be remembered, given the lives he touched and the progress he brought to Ilocos and the nation.
Savellano passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 65, the National Tobacco Administration (NTA) announced in a Facebook post.
Savellano was the NTA’s oversight official and part of its governing board.
He also served as House deputy speaker and Ilocos Sur first district representative.
Savellano also became a governor of Ilocos Sur.
As governor and representative of Ilocos Sur, Savellano “brought meaningful progress to the province, always guided by his love for Ilocos Sur and its people,” Marcos said.
“He carried that same dedication to his role at the Department of Agriculture (DA), working tirelessly to strengthen our livestock sector and support farmers across the country,” he added.
The DA, meanwhile, honored Savellano for his efforts to improve the livestock sector despite pressing challenges.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this time of profound loss,” the DA said in a separate statement.
“Usec. DV’s unwavering commitment to advancing the livestock industry has made a significant impact on agriculture. His leadership has been instrumental in driving initiatives that enhance the productivity, sustainability, and food security in agriculture.”
To honor his legacy, the national flag at the DA’s main building in Quezon City is flown at half-staff, the DA said.
“Rest in peace, Usec. DV. Your steadfast dedication and tireless advocacy for the welfare of our farmers and fisherfolk will forever be remembered.”
