DFA assures Filipinos are ‘doing well’ in US amid Trump deportations

Despite the crackdown on illegal immigrants in the United States, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo assured that Filipinos are “doing well” there because of the “good reputation” they built in many industries globally.

During last Friday’s Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon briefing, the official said that Filipinos working abroad are known not only for their hard work, but for their contributions to the countries where they work.

“We are doing our best. I think iyong mga (the) Filipinos are doing well at saka (and also), I think, ang reputation natin ay talagang napakaganda sa mga bayan na napuntahan nila (we have a really good reputation in the countries where the Filipinos are),” he explained.

In particular, the DFA chief noted Filipino contributions in the field of health care, banking, hotel services, and management.

Manalo, however, still assured Filipinos in the US “that our embassies and consulates are ready to provide whatever assistance they may need in case kailangan nila ng assistance (they need assistance).”

This came on the heels of some 24 Filipinos deported, although the DFA chief said these were involved in crimes and their deportations were processed even during the Biden administration.

Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel “Babe” Romualdez also earlier reported that some 80 Filipinos have already been processed and are up for deportation.

Meanwhile, Manalo clarified that the Philippines will remain committed to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement despite US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the international body and treaty.

“Well, of course, decision iyan ng (that’s the decision of the) United States. It’s their right if they wish to withdraw or join,” he said.

“As far as the Philippines is concerned, klaro naman ang posisyon natin (our position is clear), I spoke a bit about climate change, that will not change. And ganoon pa rin ang mga priorities natin (Our priorities are the same),” he added.

He also underscored the importance of being a member of the WHO because of the potential health security issues and risks of pandemics.

“So, we will continue our policies sa (with) World Health. We will have to see kung anong (what the) effect, but the Philippines will continue its policies,” Manalo stressed. — Raymund Antonio
