“Ako po ang magiging boses ninyo pagdating sa Senado.”

This is the pledge of Makati City Mayor and senatorial aspirant Abby Binay to the public on Thursday, Feb. 20. She cited her long experience in addressing basic needs of the people as the mayor of Makati City and as a long time public servant.

During a press conference of her party Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas, Binay said her experience in local governance has given her firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by ordinary Filipinos.

“Alam ko po ‘yung mga problema ninyo. I can totally relate to your daily problems and I know your concerns and your issues (I know what your problems are. I can totally relate to your daily problems and I know your concerns and your issues),” Binay stated.

She said that like her fellow candidates, she was chosen by the President based on her track record, capabilities and accomplishments as a lawyer, member of Congress, and city mayor.

“If you notice in the speech of the President, consistently sinasabi niya — ilan sa amin abugado, ilan sa amin ang congressman, ilan sa amin ang mayroong experience sa government. We are chosen based on our track record, based on our qualities, our capabilities, or what kind of service we can give to the government (If you notice in the speech of the President, he consistently said that most of us are lawyers, others are congressmen, and most of us already have experience in the government. We are chosen based on our track record, based on our qualities, our capabilities, or what kind of service we can give to the government),” she explained.

The mayor outlined her key priorities in the Senate, including free maintenance medicines for senior citizens, improved early childhood education with better-trained daycare teachers, and tax-free bonuses and overtime pay for workers.

On Feb. 18, Binay said she is confident that her party will perform strongly in Metro Manila in the midterm elections in May as the group consists of leaders and officials throughout the national government with proven competence and track record.

The slate also includes former Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Sec. Benhur Abalos, Sen. Pia Cayetano, former Sen. Ping Lacson, Sen. Lito Lapid, Sen. Imee Marcos, former Sen. Manny Pacquiao, Sen. Bong Revilla, former Senate Pres. Tito Sotto, Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino, Rep. Erwin Tulfo, and House Deputy Speaker Camille Villar. — Patrick Garcia
