PH’s Tancontian strikes sambo gold in Japan tilt

Tancontian dominated his division, securing three consecutive victories against Japan’s top sambists.

He defeated Dan Hiramo Tokai in the opening round, overpowered Taichin Sasaki in the semifinals and triumphed over Taishin Ide Shokokuji in the final bout.

Sambo Pilipinas president Paolo Tancontian expressed gratitude to the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine Olympic Committee and Tingog Partylist for their continued support in providing international exposure for Filipino sambo athletes.

The 23-year-old Tancontian has been on an impressive winning streak. He, along with fellow national samboist Godwin Langbayan, showcased world-class grappling skills by clinching gold medals at the 2024 Sports Jiu-Jitsu Federation (SJJF) World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Nagoya, Japan.

A 2019 SEA Games sambo gold medalist, Tancontian also claimed victory at the Male Blue Adult Super-Heavyweight Gi event in Japan, where he bested Endo Masataka in the finals after eliminating Ai Brock from Mano Jiujitsu in the semifinals.

Earlier this year, Tancontian added to his growing list of achievements by winning gold at the 2024 Grand Prix de Sambo de Paris, following his triumph at the 2024 Dutch Open in March.
