MANILA, Philippines — Saying he is fed up with intrigues, Jaime Santiago has tendered his irrevocable resignation as director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
In a letter dated yesterday to President Marcos and coursed through Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Santiago said he would vacate his post as soon as a replacement is named.
There was no immediate comment from Malacañang.
Santiago, a former trial court judge, prosecutor and Manila police officer, was appointed as NBI chief on June 14 last year.
In his letter, he lauded Marcos’ ongoing campaign against corruption, noting that the challenge when he accepted the NBI post was to purge the NBI of scalawags.
“With my experience as a former police officer, prosecutor and judge, I steered the Bureau with my best leg forward – regaining the trust and confidence of the Filipino people, the media with the Bureau.”
He said a smear campaign against him started when he tendered his courtesy resignation along with other government officials, as ordered by the President after the elections.
“Detractors and those who have sinister interest in my position incessantly make moves to blemish my reputation,” he wrote in his letter.
“To my mind, lies, if repeated overtime, will give a semblance of truth,” he wrote. “I cannot allow this seemingly orchestrated move to blacken my reputation which I molded through the years.”
He thanked Marcos and promised to continue supporting his administration. — Janvic Mateo
