Regine Velasquez, dubbed Asia’s Songbird, is the new face of the weekly musical show genre on television. And what a dazzling face it is.
Dream ProjectRegine’s new show at GMA Pinoy TV, SONGBIRD, marks the triumphant return of the weekly musical genre on television. Over the years, some of the most popular singers or singer-actresses of her generation – Nora Aunor and Sharon Cuneta, for example – have topbilled their own weekly musical program. And now, it’s Regine’s turn.
“I said it’s been my dream to have a musical show,” Regine said during the SONGBIRD press conference held recently. “Having a show like this is something to be proud of kasi bihira lang nagkakaroon ng this kind of special every week, so I am very, very proud to have been given this opportunity.”
The one-hour show promises to bring Regine’s first-rate concert performances into the comfort of every viewer’s home. Fans can tune in and chill out to Regine’s soulful voice.
“Every week, it is a different theme. We feature different artists, songwriters or genres. It is very exciting,” Regine said. “There will also be different guests for each episode” she added.
Paying HomageThrough the show, Regine will pay homage to some of the biggest recording stars and most successful composers in the Philippines and the rest of the world – Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion, Barry Manilow, Rey Valera, Ogie Alcasid, Ryan Cayabyab, and George Canseco, to name a few.
SONGBIRD debuted with Regine tipping her hat to Barbara Streisand, the legendary singer-actress who is, in Regine’s own words, “the original Songbird.” Asia’s Songbird, of course, gave her own twists to Streisand’s classic songs.
Regine pointed out that SONGBIRD is quite different from the variety program SOP which she co-hosts. “In every episode of SONGBIRD, I will do around 7 to 8 songs. Minsan meron kaming medley na about 5 minutes, so para siyang concert talaga.”
World-ClassTo match Regine’s world-class talent, the production will be pulling out all the stops to deliver an extraordinary musical experience week after week. SONGBIRD boasts of a world-class set design. The LED curtain being used projects spectacular images, sceneries, and moving graphics in the backdrop.
Regine also aims to take her audience to a weekly musical journey packed with a variety of fun, entertaining musical situations and some twists along the way. On a given week, viewers may see her performing with an orchestra; the next, she will be performing ala-Broadway musical. Asia’s Songbird will also be singing songs requested by letter-senders.
“Sana po mapanood niyo ito,” Regine said during the press con. “Sana ‘yung suporta po na lagi niyong ibinibigay sa akin, sana po mahingi kong muli ngayon sa pagkakataong ito.” SONGBIRD airs exclusively on GMA Pinoy TV. To subscribe to GMA Pinoy TV, contact your preferred pay TV operator.
