Pasay escapes Muntinlupa in MPBL

June 24, 2019

Pasay outlasted home team Muntinlupa-Angelis Resort in overtime, 76-75, to gain a share of the lead in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) on Saturday night at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex.

Elvin Chan poured seven of his 11 points in the extension period, allowing the Voyagers to share the lead with Davao Occidental with an identical 2-0 record.

Earlier, Harold Arboleda tallied a league-record 22nd double-double to lift Zamboanga-Family’s Brand Sardines to a breakthrough 82-69 win at the expense of Pasig-Sta. Lucia.

Top gun Jan Jamon topscored for Pasay with 15 points on top of nine rebounds and three assists while Axel Iñigo chipped in 13 markers. Dhon Reverente added a 10-point, 15-board double-double.

Chan kept the visiting Voyagers within striking distance in overtime before Raymund Ilagan hit a floater for a 76-73 lead with 29 seconds left in the game.

Muntinlupa narrowed the gap, 75-76, after Dave Moralde converted his free throws. The Cagers saw a chance to win as Pasay’s Elmar Moradas missed his own charities.

But Reggie Basibas muffed a potential-game winning jumper for the Cagers as time expired.

Basibas’ game-high 22 points along with Ivan Villanueva’s 13 markers and Moralde’s 12 markers went for naught as Muntinlupa stayed winless in two games.

Meanwhile, the 6-foot-3 forward Arboleda posted a double-double of 11 points and 16 rebounds to hand Zamboanga a maiden triumph in MPBL’s third season.

The Valientes unleashed a balanced offense as Med Salim fired a team-best 16 points, Robin Rono racked up 15 markers and Allan Santos added 12.

Jeric Teng had 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Josan Nimes had 12 markers and Richard Velchez had a 10-point, 14-board double-double for the Realtors, who lost their season opener.
