San Beda faces JRU in NCAA hoops today

July 12, 2019

San Beda University and Lyceum of the Philippines University shoot for a second win when they battle separate foes in Season 95 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball tournament today at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

The three-time defending champions Red Lions take on Jose Rizal University (JRU) at 12 noon while the back-to-back runners-up Pirates collide with Emilio Aguinaldo (EAC) at 4 p.m.

In the other game, opening day losers Colegio de San Juan de Letran and Arellano University are on a hunt for a first win at 2 p.m.

San Beda opened its four-peat bid with a 59-46 triumph over season host Arellano on Sunday.

“It will be tough facing him,” said bemedalled coach Boyet Fernandez, pertaining to Louie Gonzales. “We’re excited to play JRU. It’s a new system under a new coach and I think they’re young just like us.”

Gonzales’ Heavy Bombers suffered a 51-82 loss to San Sebastian College-Recoletos last Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Lyceum fired off its campaign with a come-from-behind 84-80 victory over Letran behind twin brothers Jaycee and Jayvee Marcelino.

“We know that’s a new program with coach Oliver Bunyi. We’re just gonna focus on what we have control over, how we’re gonna prepare for EAC. We’re just gonna focus on the process and learn from this experience. Hopefully, we can keep winning,” said coach Topex Robinson.
