Supreme Court Associate Justice Alfredo Caguioa endorsed two of his colleagues to the post that will be vacated by Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin when he retires on October 18 this year.
Caguioa, in a letter sent to the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) on Tuesday, a copy of which was obtained by The Manila Times, endorsed Associate Justices Diosdado Peralta and Estela Perlas-Bernabe for the position of chief justice.
Caguioa said Peralta and Perlas-Bernabe are deserving of the post, not only because of seniority but because they are respected and possess the ideal qualities of a Chief Justice — intelligence, diligence, moral rectitude and leadership.
He believes that only Peralta and Perlas-Bernabe can lead the Supreme Court through difficult times, and strongly urged the JBC to choose between the two.
Caguioa was nominated for the chief justice post but he declined, saying he is “not yet worthy to be appointed as Chief Justice.”
Associate Justices Antonio Carpio and Mario Victor Leonen also declined their automatic nomination.
Carpio said he would retire eight days after Bersamin’s retirement. Leonen gave no reason for turning down the nomination, merely saying that he has no intention of applying for chief justice.
