Among the present crop of young actresses, Barbie Forteza can be said to belong to the elite class of good thespians. She has proven her mettle in drama, receiving acting awards for her performances both on TV and film.
Barbie has also proven her prowess in romantic-comedy projects. She first showed her flair in her first rom-com series, the very successful “That’s My Amboy” with Andre Paras in 2016 where she got not only good reviews but very high ratings for the show.
The following year was another fruitful period for Barbie in the rom-com genre as she headlined the much talked about late night rom-com “Meant To Be,” where she had four men trying to outdo one another to get her approval and eventually winning her heart.
There were Ken Chan, Ivan Dorschner, Jak Roberto and Addy Raj. As everybody knows, it was Ken’s character Yuan who won. But it’s an entirely different story in real life because after the airing of “Meant To Be,” it was revealed that Barbie and Jak are together already and until now, they are proving theirs is a relationship that can stand the test of time.
It looks like Barbie gets a rom-com series for TV every year, as it was last year when she convincingly portrayed the role of an empowered but light-hearted Cebuana who knew how to stand for her rights. In “Inday Will Always Love You,” she played a lechonera whose charm captivated the heart of her snobbish boss played by Derrick Monasterio. She considered this series special because it was produced by GMA Public Affairs, her first series under the department known to produce internationally awarded shows.
Although Barbie started 2019 with a heavy drama-fantasy series, “Kara-Mia,” she hopped in to another rom-com project a couple of months after the conclusion of the twin-themed show.
She had her first taping day for the late morning show, “Wagas,” featuring “Wait, Is This Love?” last Monday, with real-life boyfriend Jak Roberto as her leading man, and her co-tween star and long-time friend Kristoffer Martin as the third wheel.
“The timing couldn’t be more perfect,” she said.
“After the super heavy drama, I’m back to doing rom-com. I really enjoy doing light stuff because I get to improvise, may mga ad lib na naihihirit at napaglalaruan ang character. Like in this one, I play the role of Yummy na isang dalagang pinalaki ng dalawang man-hater na matandang dalaga. As I grew-up, nakuha ko yung pagkaayaw nila sa mga lalaki. So when two men came into my life, hate ko rin agad sila,” she continued.
Another reason why Barbie is so happy with this series is because she is working with two men who are close to her heart — her boyfriend Jak and Kristoffer, who she fondly calls frenemy.
“Ganyan kami ni Tun-tun [Kristoffer’s tweens pet name]. Sobrang lalim na ng friendship namin. We tell each other whatever it is na parang hindi maganda. We can say anything to each other na walang nau-offend. This is actually the first time I’m working again with Tun-Tun after ‘Luna Blanca’ which was maybe five years ago.”
On the set, Barbie and Kristoffer are really buddies. They talk to each other everytime.
“Ganyan kaming magbabarkada. Sobrang close namin. Isipin n’yo, if Derrick, Bea and Joyce [Ching] were here, lalong magulo. Our kind of friendship is like that. We may not work together for long or we may not see one another for long pero pag nagkita-kita, sobrang saya, sobrang close like brothers and sisters.”
When Showbuzz visited Barbie on the set, Jak was not around.
“He has taping for ‘Bubble Gang,’” Barbie volunteered. “I’m just happy that Jak and I are together in this project. Masarap din na siya ang katrabaho ko. Wala kaming ilangan sa mga scenes namin. We even help each other kung paano mas mapapaganda ang eksena.”
Barbie has a rom-com to offer every year to her fans because she is given this kind of assignment by GMA. The network trusts her big time in this kind project. They know her ability. This is the type of show that Barbie can do anytime.
She really is a natural. Yes, she now can be called TV’s Rom-Com Princess.

For many Filipinos, basketball is life. Wherever they go, they find a way to play this sport. The OFWs in the Middle East form their own teams and hold their own leagues. It’s actually a way to express how much they miss home.
It is on this account that GMA Pinoy TV decided to bring a team if celebrities to play basketball with Filipino teams in Dubai. Kapuso stars who are also passionate about basketball will go there to play in a basketball game at the Shabab Al-Ahu Sports Club on September 20. The players include Mark Herras, Andre Paras, Mikael Daez, Mike Tan, Rocco Nacino, Kristoffer Martin and Derrick Monasterio.
The Kapuso stars are just so excited that they are going to Dubai to play. They have actually started practicing. Every Sunday afternoon, they meet at the basketball court of a plush condo building to play. They get help from other Kapuso stars who also love playing basketball like Gil Cuerva, Jak Roberto, Paul Salas, Pancho Magno and David Licauco. Janine Gutierrez will serve as the team’s muse.
Among the players, it’s Kristoffer who is not really a basketball player. His sport is swimming.
“Sumasama lang ako sa kanila kasi mga kaibigan ko sila. Now that I am included in the line-up of players going to Dubai, kailangan kong mag-level up sa kanila. What I do now, aside from practicing with them is I got a personal trainer who trains me one in one. He teaches me different moves, pati sa shooting, laying-up, I get all the lessons. Minsan nga nagugulat sila sa moves ko when I play with them. Alam kasi nila hindi naman ako naglalaro talaga,” shared Kristoffer.
It’s not only Kristoffer who is excited about their upcoming game in Dubai. Mikael can’t wait to go to Dubai and play also.
“This is my first time playing in the Middle East tapos kalaro pa namin mga kapwa Pinoy din. Masaya ‘to for sure. I’m excited to meet meet our kababayans. I know we can bring happiness sa mga kapuso natin dun na sobrang miss na ang Pilipinas.”

Most of the winners of “Eat Bulaga’s That’s My Bae” are now doing so well in their respective careers. They may not be seen in the longest running noontime show regularly but they are busy doing other things in their career.
Grand winner Kenneth Medrano is busy taping for the GMA upcoming rom-com series “One Of The Baes” with Rita Daniela and Ken Chan. He portrays the role of a maritime student who stays at the boarding house owned by Rita’s father Roderick Paulate. Aside from Kenneth, other boarders include Archie Alemanya, Buboy Villar and James Teng.
For Kenneth, taping for the show is not work at all because he enjoys being with his co-stars on the set.
“Sobrang saya namin sa set kasi puro patawa mga kasama ko. There is really no dull moment. Even Rita and Ken are very nice at nakikisakay din sila,” Kenneth shared.
But among the members of the cast, Kenneth is closest to his co-“EB” Bae Joel Palencia who is like brother to him. “When I saw Joel on the set, sobrang natuwa ako kasi may kasama akong kaibigan.”
In the story though, Joel and Kenneth belong to opposite camps. While Kenneth is with the group of Rita, the good guys, Joel belongs to the bad baes headed by Rodjun Cruz and Joyce Ching.
It’s not only “One Of The Baes” that Joel is busy with. He is also in the cast of the movie “Circa,” which is one of the entries of the ongoing Pista Ng Pelikulang Pilipino. This is one project that Joel is really proud of.
“Who will not be proud to be given the chance to act alongside the great acting icons of the present generation. Isipin mo naman, Jaclyn Jose ang kaeksena mo tapos kasama mo the likes of direk Gina Alajar, direk Laurice Guillen, direk Ricky Davao, Miss Elizabeth Oropesa and the great Anita Linda. I could not believe that I was on the set with them. This is one project that is unforgettable for me,” Joel enthused.
If Kenneth is with Joel in “One Of The Baes,” it’s Bae Kim Last who is with Joel in Circa.
“Nakakatuwa nga kasi kaming mga bae, biglang nagkikita sa set ng TV show or ng movie. Like when I did ‘TODA One I Love,’ na kasama ko naman si Bae Tommy Penaflor who is now busy competing in Misters of Filipinas. I’m so glad that Kim is also part of ‘Circa.’ It’s like having your brother working with you. I hope I can work with the other baes also,” Joel expressed.
