Veteran mentor Yeng Guiao resigned as head coach of Gilas Pilipinas on Wednesday after a forgettable performance in the 2019 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup in China.
Guiao, the current head coach of Northern Luzon Expressway in the Philippine Basketball Association, posted his statement on Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) social media sites explaining his resignation as head coach.
“In the light of all these developments, I am stepping down, as of today, as the Head Coach of the Gilas Men’s Basketball Team, in order to give the SBP a free hand in building and developing a program towards achieving our objective of competing with the best of the best,” he said in a statement.
Guiao’s resignation came after Gilas Pilipinas suffered stinging losses to Italy (62-108), Serbia (67-126) and Angola (81-84) in Group D in Foshan. They also lost in the classification phase to Tunisia (67-86) and Iran (75-95) to fall to last spot at No. 32.
The team wasn’t able to match or surpass the country’s performance in the 2014 edition in Spain, where they earned at least one win under former coach Chot Reyes.
“The efforts and sacrifices of all those involved, overcoming the many trials and tribulations, putting ourselves on the world stage of basketball – I can only wish we could have performed better these past two weeks, but the odds were stacked against us,” said Guiao.
He also thanked the SBP for the opportunity. He was appointed as the national team coach during the 2018 Asian Games on September 1, 2018 in Indonesia.
The Philippine team headed by National Basketball Association player Jordan Clarkson finished fifth place in that quadrennial meet.
“Nonetheless, I take full responsibility. I am sorry we could not deliver a better performance. Our players gave their best against talented, bigger, stronger, and better prepared athletes from the best teams in the world. I truly appreciate their efforts and sacrifices — and that of their families. Our times together will never be erased from my memory.”
Guiao was appointed as Gilas Pilipinas head coach on November 7 after steering the team to victories in the Asian Games and the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers fourth window.
