Bersamin bids SC farewell

October 15, 2019

Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin said his goodbyes at the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday, three days before his retirement.

During his last flag ceremony, Bersamin thanked all those who helped him during his 33 years in the judiciary.

He admitted having mixed emotions as he prepares to leave the high tribunal.

“Half of me is happy, the other half sad. Happy because finally I go into retirement with the comforting thought that one younger magistrate shall continue the work I leave behind. Very sad because I am finally leaving this place and bidding farewell to this community. It is like leaving my home of over a decade,” he said.

“As chief justice I have done everything within the bounds of the law to afford the fullest access to my office. If I was not able to address any concerns brought to my notice, it is not for lack of trying. I ask your understanding of me, I have limitations,” he added.

The chief justice said he had no regrets.

“Your steady support and willing cooperation have made my life as a member of the court and as chief justice much less burdensome. I have always endeavored to be true to my oath of office and have always discharged my duties and responsibilities in the best lights that God has endowed me with. I have faithfully served the people, conscientiously discharged my office and dutifully fulfilled their trust,” he added.
