The Manila Times Entertainment learned on Friday that Regal Films matriarch Lily Monteverde, who was also duly named Ina ng Pelikulang Pilipino by the Film Development Council for her immeasurable contribution to the movie industry, feels slighted by the snub of her Maricel Soriano-starrer, “The Heiress,” during the announcement of the last four entries to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival.
“She’s sad to be sure since all the other major film outfits like Viva and Star Cinema had their entries chosen but she isn’t mad,” said a source close to the 80-year-old producer. “She’s not angry though but she’d like an explanation from the selection committee why a well-made movie with a big named actor like Maricel got the snub — para daw she’ll learn from it and she’ll know what to do next year.”
The source added that Mother Lily feels it’s the movie-going public at the losing end for missing out on a major production like the Diamond Star’s at Christmas time.
“Actually, she attended the announcement of the final four entries on Wednesday and those who saw her admired her for staying until the very end of the program even with the snub. She could have easily walked out but Mother Lily always maintains her dignity in showbiz events.”
On Thursday, a well meaning friend called a member of the selection committee to ask on behalf of Mother Lily their reasons for leaving The Heiress out from the Magic 8, who could only say there can only be one entry per genre and a horror film, “Sundo,” had previously been selected.
The committee member also suggested the producer write a formal letter to ask for an official explanation, which Mother Lily’s advisers counseled her not to do.
“Sabi nila Mother has been participating in the MMFF for decades. Does she really have to write a letter pa just for a simple question?” the source relayed.
Moving forward, Regal has decided to show The Heiress on November 27 already, confident they have a good movie in their hands.
What will surely be awkward come December though is if indeed the MMFF will bestow an award on Mother Lily for her unwavering support for the MMFF and the movie industry in general for the longest time during the Gabi ng Parangal. How will they begin to send her an invitation to attend after this?
