VOICE FROM THE SOUTH

As Jesus was bidding farewell to his disciples before His ascension into heaven, He asked His Father to give His beloved disciples: glory, eternal life, and unity.
I was once invited to dinner by a former staff member, Titol, who was dying of cancer. She was entrusting her children to her husband. There were a two-year old girl, a five-year-old boy, and a ten-year-old girl. She was making sure that when she was gone, her children would be well taken care of. As we were finishing dinner, the little one started to cry. The ten-year-old girl stood up to take care of her. The mother did not budge in her seat with her bandana covered head except to remark: “This was how it will be in future. She has to learn to take care of her little sister.” She was bidding farewell. Farewells are sad. I could hardly hold back my tears.
So too Our Lord was bidding farewell to His disciples. He was asking the Father to give them glory, eternal life, and unity. But in this case it was not too bad. It was mission accomplished.
He asked the Father to give them glory. What is glory? It is the joy and splendor; the peace and happiness of resting in the eternal bosom of the Father. He is asking that where He will be, His loved ones will also be. He is leaving them behind but He wants the best for His loved ones.
“Glorify Your Son that I in turn may glorify you.” Now this is eternal life to know that You are the only God. You gave them to me and I have kept them. They have come to accept that You sent me and that now I am going back to You. Please take care of them. They have accepted that You sent me and I leave them the same message that You and I are one.
He is also asking that they may have eternal life. And this is eternal life, he said, that they have accepted that You and I are One. This is the message of salvation: that You sent me to save all of mankind. You have chosen them and they have accepted my message. Please give them eternal life. And finally please give them unity just as You and I are one. Please give them glory, eternal life, and unity.
In His farewell speech He could only thing of His loved ones. Father give them glory, just like your glory and mine. Give them eternal life and finally unity as You Father and I are one.
