Cargo vessel catches fire

A local cargo vessel caught fire yesterday morning, which was quickly controlled by responding personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) near Marikaban Island, Batangas.

The PCG immediately dispatched BRP Boracay to put out the fire onboard MV Moreta Venture, a Philippine-registered cargo vessel, which was located 1.2 nautical miles southwest off Marikaban Island at around 4:53 a.m.

BRP Boracay was berthed in Sta. Clara, Batangas City when the PCG Command Center received a distress call about the incident.

According to Commodore Leovigildo Panopio of the PCG District — Southern Tagalog, there was no casualty from the incident, which was immediately contained. Fire out was declared at around 8 a.m.

Upon the PCG personnel’s arrival at the incident area, they ensured that all officers and crew onboard the burning vessel were safe and accounted for before combatting fire onboard.

The cargo vessel, which is now dead on the water and drifting, will be towed to the nearest port for safety.

Probers are still conducting investigations on the incident to determine the cause of the blaze.
