Benguet scraps fruit festival

BAGUIO CITY — There will be no flashy celebration of the traditional Fruit Festival, held every September in Sablan, Benguet this year, mayor Manuel Munar announced Friday.

Instead, a simple thanksgiving ceremony will be held by municipal and national government personnel, local police, and health workers with excess funds to be added to the town’s resources being utilized in its anti-coronavirus disease efforts.

“The municipal council will still have to meet and decide how to spend the funds, but initially they said that it will be spent for programs to address this pandemic,” Munar said.

Sablan is popularly known for being the “fruit basket” of Benguet province, abundant with harvests of rambutan, durian, and mangosteen.
