The House committee on good government and public accountability is mulling giving President Rodrigo Duterte emergency powers to solve the alleged massive corruption at the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation.
House Committee on Public Accounts Chairperson and Anakalusugan Rep. Michael Defensor during the hearing on PhilHealth mess Wednesday said there had already been discussions among lawmakers as to the proposal.
“The committee is inclined and we are already discussing about the emergency powers to be granted to the President,” Defensor said.
Health Secretary Fransisco Duque III, who attended the hybrid hearing, said he is open to the measure.
“Opo. Maganda yung inyong panukala na bigyan ng karagdagang kapangyarihan si Pangulong Duterte para mas maging mabilis ang reporma [sa] PhilHealth,” Duque said.
Several anomalies are hounding PhilHealth including alleged overpricing of information technology equipment and alleged improper and illegal implementation of the interim reimbursement mechanism, among others.
The Senate has already recommended filing criminal charges against several top officials of PhilHealth including Duque and former PhilHealth President Ricardo Morales over alleged massive corruption within the agency.
