Motorcycle-riding assailants gunned down a Sorsogon journalist Monday night, with the police immediately forming an investigating team and the province’s governor condemning the killing.
Jobert “Polpog” Bercasio, known for his hard-hitting commentaries on Balangibog News Online and a former commentator for a radio station in Legazpi City, was on board his motorcycle from the city proper en route to Seabreeze Subdivision in Barangay Cabid-An when he was shot multiple times by two suspects at about 7:55 p.m.
City police chief Supt. Benito Dipad Jr. said Bercasio died on the spot. Empty M-16 rifle shells were recovered.
“Police investigators are now reviewing closed-circuit television footages along the route taken by the victim for possible identification of the suspects,” Dipad said.
Police Regional Office 5 (PRO-5), through the Sorsogon Provincial Office, formed Special Investigation Team Bercasio, to be led by Dipad, to look into the murder.
“PNP Bicol condemns in the strongest manner the brutal killing of Bercasio. It will mobilize all means possible within the limits of the law to investigate and identify the culprit of the incidents and to give justice to the bereaved family,” PRO-5 director Bartolome Bustamante said.
Sorsogon Governor Francis “Chiz” Escudero likewise condemned Bercasio’s death.
“I have ordered our local police to conduct a thorough investigation on the incident and to relentlessly pursue the perpetrators,” Escudero posted on Facebook.
“Any attack or killing of a journalist or a mediaman is also an attack on the very same freedom that we swore to uphold and protect. My sincerest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Polpog.”
