A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit waters off Sarangani town, Davao Occidental, Saturday afternoon and was felt in parts of mainland Mindanao, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The quake struck 5:30 p.m., in waters 148 kilometers southwest of the town, Phivolcs said on its website.

It was tectonic in origin, with the focus located 314 kilometers below the surface, the agency said.

Intensity 3 was experienced in General Santos City, followed by Intensity 2 in Monkayo, Davao de Oro. An instrumental intensity of 2 was recorded in Alabel, Sarangani.

Despite its strength, the quake was not expected to cause damage because of its depth, but aftershocks may occur, Phivolcs said.
