Aetas get resettlement, business

CLARK FREEPORT — The Clark Development Corporation (CDC) recently announced that it will provide not only resettlement to the less-fortunate members of the Aeta community in the area but also a chance to have a source of livelihood.

In an interview with Daily Tribune, CDC president and chief executive officer Manuel Gaerlan disclosed that the CDC is mulling 80 hectares of land to be given to the members of the minority in Pulang Lupa as a permanent place to construct their own dwellings.

He added that the CDC board had already approved their housing project, saying that it is not only intended for the kulot (Aetas) but also for the unat, referring to other homeless Filipino people in the area.

Displaced by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo 30 years ago, the Aetas were left without any permanent places to stay and worse, survive through begging.

“We initiated this housing for them because they are really poor and no decent place to live in and they should be given more opportunity,” Gaerlan said.

Most of the Aetas in the community have resorted to begging food and money to as far as Bataan, Tarlac and Zambales and for Gaerlan, helping them out of the predicament, while seen as a tall order, is doable.

“We’ll not only provide them housing but also small businesses as their form of livelihood. We’ll turn their area as industrial and commercial places,” said Gaerlan.

The CDC president said that the agency has already donated and fixed electricity initially in the area.

Previously, Converge ICT chief executive officer Dennis Anthony Uy, together with Converge ICT chair Jose de Jesus, CDC chair Atty. Edgardo Pamintuan, Gaerlan, CDC director Nestor

Villaroman Jr. and CDC director general Emmanuel Salamat led the distribution of 60 learning tablets and nine Large Format Displays to the selected Aeta students.

Gaerlan said the materials will be used by Aeta students to continue their education via e-learning module even amidst the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.
