Navy seizes motorboats, contraband

ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) reported on Tuesday that it has intercepted two motor launches and a vehicle loaded with some 567 master cases of assorted smuggled cigarettes with an estimated market value of P19.7 million.

In a statement, Bureau of Customs Zamboanga City district collector Segundo Barte Jr., said that the NFWM — in coordination with BoC District Zamboanga — apprehended two watercrafts carrying smuggled cigarettes off the seawaters near Barangay Ayala and Barangay Sinunuc here shortly after midnight, and a Mercedes-Benz van on Monday.

NFWM commander Commodore Toribio D. Adaci Jr. identified the two vessels as M/B Nurshida and M/B Dream Boy which was believed to have originated from Sulu province.

Adaci disclosed that the M/B Nurshida was spotted by naval operatives near the shores of Barangay Ayala manned by seven crew, while the M/B Dream Boy was spotted also near the shorelines of Barangay Sinunuc manned by five crew.

After the joint operatives from the BoC and NFWM boarded the two motorboats, they discovered that M/B Nurshida was loaded with 228 master cases of assorted smuggled cigarettes worth P7.9 million while M/B Dream Boy was discovered to be carrying 274 master cases of assorted smuggled tobacco products worth P9.6 million.

Meantime, Marine soldiers manning a checkpoint in barangay Maasin in this city on Monday also intercepted 65 master cases of smuggled cigarettes with an estimated market value of P2.2 million loaded on a blue-green Mercedes-Benz 100D.
