1Sambayan could suffer the same fate as Otso Diretso — political analyst

A political analyst on Sunday said that the 1Sambayan Coalition could suffer the same fate as Otso Diretso where no one from its eight senatorial bets made it in the 2019 elections.

In an interview over DZMM, University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, Professor Aries Arugay added that the 1Sambayan should learn from the mistakes of the Otso Diretso to ensure the victory of its candidates.

“First, 1Sambayanan should first determine their competitor because what happened to the Otso Diretso, they waged war against President Rodrigo Duterte, and during that time, he was not even running in the 2019 elections and during that time the popularity of the president was really high,” Arugay said.

Arugay was reacting to the launching of 1Sambayan’s possible nominees for the 2022 presidential elections, where the names of Vice President Leni Robredo; Senator Grace Poe; former senator Antonio Trillanes, IV; Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto, House Deputy Speaker Bro. Eddie Villanueva and failed 2019 Otso Diretso senatorial bet Chel Diokno were included in the list.

“The campaign should be strategic, directed toward the rivals so Otso Diretso should have aimed against their fellow senatorial candidates and not the president as he was not even on the ballot,” Arugay said.

At the same time, Arugay also noted that there was also an outright rejection from the possible candidates floated by 1Sambayan.

“It is not good if even those being nominated said they have no plans to run. What is important now is if there will be opposition candidates, there should really be resolved to run and to campaign and to represent supposed sentiments being represented by the 1 Sambayan,” Arugay added.

Among those who immediately issued their respective statements that they have no plans to seek the presidential elections were Poe and Santos.

There were also reports that prior to the announcement of the possible nominees on 12 June, Senator Nancy Binay and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno asked that their names be removed from the list of 1Sambayan presidential contenders.

Arugay added that it is too early to determine the winnability of 1Sambayan presidential nominees but acknowledged that those who already announced that they are not running in next year’s elections are still testing the waters.

“That’s part of our political system, the testing the waters, feeling the pulse, feeling the ground,” he noted.

“It is not politically desirable from the standpoint of someone who is trying to build a campaign. It is not good when those you want to be included in the coalition do not want to be part of 1Sambayan,” Arugay said.

Arugay added that the administration is still popular, adding that the opposition to come up with effective strategies to increase the chance of winning the coming polls.

“ It is important to consider that the administration continues to enjoy the trust of the majority and that’s a challenge,” he said.
