Gang member killed in ‘shootout’

An alleged member of a gang involved in gunrunning and other crimes was killed when he allegedly shot it out with lawmen who conducted an entrapment operation in Oas, Albay, early Saturday.

Killed was Rickson Sanchez, alias “Tikboy,” a known member of the Concepcion criminal gang, according to a report from the Bicol regional police. Members of different police units carried out the operation in Barangay Camagong, around 7 a.m.

Lawmen earlier learned that Sanchez was seen selling short firearms, and they hatched an entrapment where they tried to “buy” a gun from him for P10,000.

After handing a cal. 38 revolver to the poseur-buyer, Sanchez apparently sensed the presence of other operatives nearby, drew his firearm and opened fire, the report said.

This prompted the operatives to retaliate until Sanchez fell. The suspect was brought to a hospital in Ligao City, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Police recovered at the scene the .357 magnum revolver that Sanchez used and the marked P500 bill used in the sting.

Also recovered were fired and misfired cartridges from Sanchez’ gun, a sachet of suspected shabu, as well as the “stolen” motorcycle which the suspect used.

Aside from gunrunning, the Concepcion gang has been tagged for involvement in robbery and hold-up, gun for hire, as well as car and motorcycle theft, in Bicol, Calabarzon, and Metro Manila, the regional police said.
