PNP to study regular neuro-psychiatric tests for cops

National Police chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said he is considering suggestions on subjecting lawmen to regular neuro-psychiatric tests.

“The PNP will study this recommendation. Personally, I acknowledge that there is really a need to prioritize this,” Eleazar said in a statement.

Calls for regular neuro-psychiatric assessment of policemen first surfaced after SMSgt. Jonel Nuezca shot and killed his neighbors Sonia and Frank Anthony Gregorio in Paniqui, Tarlac, in December 2020.

These were again brought to light after MSgt. Hensie Zinampan shot his neighbor Lilibeth Valdez in Brgy. Greater Fairview, Quezon City, last Monday.

“Dapat nabibigyan din po ng pansin ang trauma risk management ng aming organisasyon. Pag-aaralan po naming mabuti kung paanong magagawang regular ang neuro-psychiatric tests sa lahat ng pulis,” Eleazar said.

The PNP chief, however, admitted that the force’s health care services still has limitations.

“Until then, our police commanders who observe signs of emotional imbalance or mental disorder on their men should immediately refer them for neuro-psychiatric evaluation, through their respective health units. This way we can help them cope and heal and avoid being a danger to themselves and others,” he said.

Eleazar said the PNP will explore possible partnerships with groups, institutions, and facilities advocating the importance of mental health.
