Five-way race for Cebu gov post seen

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Cebu province announced that it will be a five-way battle for the gubernatorial position of the province come the 2022 national elections in May.

Based on Comelec-Cebu data, incumbent Governor Gwendolyn Garcia is gunning for reelection under One Cebu party and the ruling PDP Laban party, while former Tourism Secretary and 5th District Rep. Joseph Ace Durano will run for governor under the Partido Pilipino sa Pagbabago.

The other three gubernatorial candidates are Martin Mari Lozada of Abag-Promdi founded by the late Cebu Governor Emilio “Lito” Osmena, Pablo Olmedo, a pastor and Nonito Magnanao, a retired Army and political science teacher.

“We initially thought only few will be filing because of the pandemic. Now, we have five aspiring governors and three vice governors. Based on our observations, this year’s filing has more candidates than the previous elections, back when there’s no pandemic,” said Cebu Comelec provincial supervisor lawyer Lionel Marco Castillano.

Data from the Comelec-Cebu showed that there were 1,020 Certificates of Candidacy were filed for various elective positions in the province — from councilors up to the House of Representatives.

In the congressional race, Talisay City Mayor Gerard Anthony Gullas is running unopposed for the First District congressional seat, while the Second District battle will be a battle between board members Edsel Galeos and Jose Mari “Tata” Salvador.

Reelectionist Third District Representative Pablo John “PJ” Garcia will be against businessman Anthony Henryl Pono of Pinamungajan under Abag-Promdi.

In the Fourth district, it will be between reelectionist Rep. Janice Salimbangon against Association of Barangay Council president Celestino Martinez III, while the Fifth district Rep. Vincent Franco Frasco will again be pitted against former Rep. Red Durano.

In the Sixth district congressional seat, Ako Bisaya partylist Representative Sonny Lagon is running unopposed along with Seventh district Representative Peter John Calderon.
