China’s top diplomat to extend Xi’s invitation to Marcos to visit

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi will arrive in Manila today (Tuesday) for a two-day visit upon the invitation of Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo.

He is scheduled to make a courtesy call on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to personally extend an invitation from Chinese leader Xi Jinping for the Philippine leader to visit China.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Wang will be the first foreign counterpart to be received by Manalo.

The two officials are set to have a bilateral meeting where they will discuss a wide range of issues, focusing on maintaining and building on the positive trend of relations between the Philippines and China.

Wang was last in Manila in January 2021 for an official visit upon the invitation of then-Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr.

Wang is currently on a Southeast Asian swing and will be in the region until July 14 to attend the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the Palace said Marcos has no scheduled state visit yet as the Chief Executive is busy completing his Cabinet.

“The President has not announced any state visits for now. He is busy building his Cabinet,” she said.

“Let’s wait for Malacanang to formally acknowledge it [Biden’s invitation], and then we will probably make the announcement with regard to whether or not it’s going to happen,” she added.
