Ayub Hirsi Ali, 26, shot dead as he leaves Richmond Hill funeral of Gidid Mohamed, 27, himself, shot to death last week

Police are still searching for three suspects in Ali’s killing, whom they describe as Black males wearing hoodies and masks at the time.
Police have identified the victim of a fatal shooting during a funeral in Richmond Hill, Ont. Thursday.

Ayub Hirsi Ali, 26, was killed by gunfire as he and approximately 60 other guests were leaving the funeral of Gidid Mohamed, a 27-year-old who himself was shot to death last week.

An unidentified 27-year-old man also suffered gunshot wounds at the Thursday funeral. He remains in hospital in serious condition.

Police are still searching for three suspects in Ali’s killing, whom they describe as Black males wearing hoodies and masks at the time.

Police say the attack on Ali was targeted.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the shooting that occurred on Leslie Street at the gates of the Toronto Muslim Cemetery,” said Sabi Ahsan, manager of the cemetery where the shooting took place. “Cemetery staff were not aware of any safety concerns. The well-being of all those attending at the Toronto Muslim Cemetery is of great importance to all of us. We want the cemetery to continue to be a safe and respected place.”

Ali’s killing echoes the murder of 18-year-old Amon Beckles, who was fatally shot at his close friend Jamal Hemmings’ funeral in 2005, during what became known as the “Summer of the Gun.” Both Beckles and Hemmings’ murders remain unsolved.

Police ask that anyone with information relevant to Thursday’s attack contact the Homicide Unit at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7865, or email the Homicide Unit at homicide@yrp.ca.
