Over P2 million worth of assistance released for ‘Odette’ victims in Southern Leyte

Two million and seventy-five thousand worth of assistance was released by the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) to victims of typhoon “Odette” in Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte.

In a statement, PRC said that 223 families from the said barangay received P5,000 cash assistance while 100 families were given emergency shelter tool kits worth P9,600 in a program held on Sept. 19.

“These cash grants and shelter tool kits are beneficial to their recovery. It will jumpstart the livelihoods of the affected families in Southern Leyte. It can ensure their recovery and help them start anew,” said PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard Gordon.

This initiative was in partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the German Red Cross, and the American Red Cross, PRC said.

The distribution of assistance was a part of the organization’s P455 million worth of recovery operations for typhoons “Odette” and “Agathon” victims mostly in Visayas and Mindanaoas well as for its Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Peace and Development Project.

PRC has been sending cash and other assistance since December 2021 and it will last until September 2022.

Families from Southern Leyte, Leyte, Palawan, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Cebu, Lapu-Lapu City, Bohol, Dinagat Islands, Siargao, Surigao del Norte, Maguindanao, and Lanao del Sur have already benefited from the project.

On Sept. 15, P12.5 million worth of aid was released by PRC to typhoon “Odette” victims in San Benito, Siargao Island; Surigao City; and Basilisa, Dinagat Islands.

While on Sept. 11, the organization distributed P8.19 million of cash assistance to families in Lanao Del Sur and Maguindanao under its BARMM Peace and Development Project.
