THE Philippines is in the running for five major trophies in the Asia category in the 2023 World Travel Awards (WTA), Department of Tourism (DoT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco announced on Tuesday.
Two of the country’s most popular stops, Cebu and Intramuros, have been nominated, respectively, as Top Wedding Destination and as Leading Tourist Attraction after winning it last year.
The Philippines is again in the running for Asia’s Leading Beach Destination at this year’s 30th edition of the WTA, also after bagging the same category in September last year in Vietnam.
This year, it is also competing for the title of Asia’s Leading Dive Destination, which it has held for the past four years, from 2019 to 2022.
The DoT itself was also nominated for the 2023 WTA as Asia’s Leading Tourism Board.
“We are extremely elated upon receiving the news on these nominations at the landmark 30th anniversary of the World Travel Awards,” Frasco said.
“These recurring nominations clearly manifest the growing global travel demand in the Philippines, one that we aim to sustain in the coming days through the initiatives we have laid out for the tourism industry’s recovery and transformation post-pandemic,” she added.
Voting for the 2023 World Travel Awards’ various categories (including Asia) officially commenced on Feb. 20, 2023 and will remain open until midnight on March 19, 2023.
“I invite my fellow Filipinos as well as our foreign friends to show some love and help keep the travel momentum going for the Philippines. Sign up and cast your votes,” Frasco said.
