PBA scoring leader vows to work harder

TERRAFIRMA’S vastly improved shooting guard Juami Tiongson has no plans of slowing down even after coming off another PBA career milestone.

The former Ateneo gunner closed the season-ending Governors’ Cup with a career-best 25.6 points per game average to lead all locals in scoring.

Tiongson, the 2021 Most Improved Player, also shot 46.3 percent from three-point zone, while averaging 40.4 minutes per contest, the most he’s had since joining the league in 2014.

The 32-year-old Tiongson, though, humbly admitted that posting a career output would not have been possible if not for the support of the Terrafirma veterans led by Alex Cabagnot, Eric Camson and Aldrech Ramos as well as coach John Cardel.

“Honestly, it’s coach John and the coach staff [support]. They give me the confidence to commit mistakes and learn from them. They also challenged me to be better defensively and would sometimes assign me to defend the best player on the other side,” Tiongson told The Manila Times.

“And if you noticed, we’re running a lot of screens to get me open. Also my teammates, they trust me offensively and encourage me to be more aggressive, especially kuya Alex, Eric and Aldrech. Won’t be possible if it weren’t for them,” he added.

Tiongson understands that personal goals take the backseat since the big picture is still all about winning a league championship.

No wonder, he’s constantly working on his game and body, knowing that by next season, teams will be targeting him defensively.

“Have to work on my body more. I have to get stronger because they use me as a two-guard, so I’m at a disadvantage guarding taller and bigger guards,” explained the 12th overall pick of Blackwater in the 2014 PBA Rookie Draft.

“Will also add more reps to my shooting, and need to be more consistent and focus, especially against taller and more athletic defenders.”
