PH, Japan, US coast guards affirm importance of free, open Indo-Pacific

THE coast guards of the Philippines, Japan and the United States have affirmed the importance of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) in a meeting among the three sides on Saturday.

All three have agreed on the necessity of “conducting periodical exercises”, in ensuring the Indo-Pacific region’s stability and security.

In addition, they have agreed to continue trilateral efforts in human resource development, as well as closer information exchange and “further coordination for expanded cooperation in various fields.”

The Japan Coast Guard (JCG), along with the Philippine (PCG) and US Coast Guards (USCG), will conduct trilateral maritime exercises, beginning Monday, June 5 and will last until Wednesday, June 7.

“The JCG, PCG and USCG agreed on the necessity of conducting periodical exercises in order to ensure the stability and security of the Indo-Pacific region,” the JCG said in a press statement on Saturday.
