The pair were named during a sendoff party to the Philippine delegations for the Asian Games and Para Games at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).

“[Didal and Obiena] are our flag bearers for the upcoming [2022 Asian Games],” the POC wrote on their social media handles on Tuesday, the day after the sendoff. “They carry the hopes and dreams of our nation as we march towards glory.”

Obiena, the current world number two in pole vault, is fresh off a silver medal finish at the Eugene Diamond League in the United States, while Didal is the defending women’s skateboarding Asian Games champion.

The Philippines is sending 395 athletes to Hangzhou, where they will play in 37 sports.

Notable athletes going to the Chinese city include Olympic gold medal weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz and boxers Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, and Eumir Marcial, all of whom won medals in the recent Olympic Games in Tokyo, as well as some members of the Philippine team who participated in the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup, including Olivia McDaniel, Sara Eggesvik and Sarina Bolden.
