Senate intensifies manhunt for Guo; next hearing set on July 29

Estrada emphasized the need for a collaborative effort to locate the mayor, who is at the center of a Senate investigation into the illicit activities of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO).

Senator Risa Hontiveros, chair of the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality, highlighted the importance of Guo’s presence at the hearings, with the next session scheduled for July 29. Hontiveros stressed that Guo’s testimony is crucial for the ongoing probe.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, who co-leads the investigation with Hontiveros, criticized Guo for her repeated absences at Senate hearings on June 26 and July 10, which led to contempt charges against her. Gatchalian earlier called for Guo to voluntarily surrender to authorities.

Guo’s lawyer, Stephen David, indicated that the mayor has been considering to submit herself to authorities, citing health reasons and receiving death threats. David reiterated that Guo’s absences were not intentional but due to legitimate concerns.

On Saturday, teams from the Office of the Senate Sergeant-At-Arms (OSAA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) attempted to serve an arrest order to Guo at QJJ Farms in Bamban, Tarlac, but they were unable to locate her. Only Guo’s accountant, Nancy Gamo, was brought to the Senate.

Senate President Francis Escudero assured Guo’s safety if she is brought to the Senate detention facility, extending the same assurance to her family and Dennis Cunanan, former Technology Livelihood Resource Center (TLRC) Deputy Director and authorized representative of the POGO hubs raided in Bamban and Porac, Pampanga. — Macon Ramos-Araneta
