The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is teetering on the brink of collapse due to escalating tensions over hostage releases and mutual accusations of truce violations. The situation has been further intensified by US President Donald Trump’s ultimatum to Hamas, demanding the release of all Israeli hostages by noon on Saturday, 15 February, or face severe consequences.
The ceasefire agreement, reached in January 2025, was designed to facilitate the gradual release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody.
However, this delicate balance has been disrupted. Hamas has halted the release of hostages, alleging that Israel has violated the terms of the ceasefire. Specifically, Hamas accuses Israel of delaying the return of displaced Palestinians to northern Gaza, targeting civilians with shelling and gunfire, and obstructing the entry of humanitarian aid.
