President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Friday honored Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile as the latter celebrated his 101st birthday, calling him a “statesman, legal luminary, and exemplary public servant.”
In a statement on his social media accounts, the President highlighted Enrile’s contributions to the country, saying he has not only witnessed history but actively shaped it.
“In that time, he has amassed a wealth of wisdom and experience, which he generously shares. It is one that all presidents, including myself, have gladly partaken in,” Mr. Marcos said.
The President also noted the significance of Enrile’s birthday falling on Valentine’s Day, saying it serves as a reminder that his intellect is matched by his “warmth of heart for the Filipino people.”
“We are truly blessed to have you on our team as our Chief Presidential Legal Counsel,” Marcos said, wishing Enrile good health and spirits.
Enrile, a former senator and defense minister, has had a decades long political career marked by both influence and controversy. Now serving as the administration’s top legal adviser, he remains active in government affairs despite his age. — Charles Dantes
