ILOILO CITY — Thirty eight people were injured on Black Saturday, April 19, after an overloaded jeep flipped on its side in Miag-ao town, Iloilo province.
The private jeep with 58 people (57 passengers and a driver) was on its way to a beach resort in San Joaquin town from Anilao town when the accident happened.
According to the Miag-ao Municipal Police Station, the jeep flipped on its side while approaching a downhill road in Barangay Maninila.
Residents of the barangay became the first responders when they were able to help those who were injured, many of who were taken to a district hospital in neighboring Guimbal town.
Based on the alcohol breath analyzer test conducted by a personnel of the Land Transportation Office (LTO), driver Robert Alemania was not under the influence of alcohol.
Alemania told police he lost control while the jeep was navigating a downhill road.
A surveillance footage found out that the jeep’s roof was entirely filled with passengers, many of whom were teenagers.
Seven victims were taken to hospitals in Iloilo City for more severe injuries. — Tara Yap
