The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 29 aftershocks from the magnitude-5.9 earthquake that struck Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat on Easter Sunday, as authorities advised residents and communities to stay alert for further ground shaking.
The main tremor struck at 11 minutes past midnight of April 20. It was an offshore quake with Phivolcs tracing its location at 51 kilometers southwest of Palimbang at a depth of six kilometers—likely triggered by a movement in the Cotabato Trench.
As of early morning on April 20, the state seismic agency plotted 12 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 1.6 to 5.4—six of them are strong enough to be felt by humans. On social media platform X, some netizens reported a series of ground shaking that interrupted their sleep.
The quake has affected residents in the epicenter as well as nearby communities in Sultan Kudarat. Moderate to strong intensities were likewise reported in several towns across neighboring provinces such as Sarangani, Cotabato, South Cotabato, Davao del Sur, and Zamboanga del Sur.
Phivolcs said it expects damage from this earthquake. No casualties or injuries have been reported yet by local authorities as of this posting.
