Filipinas hold firm but Fall 1-0 to Australia in Group A Clash

Olivia McDaniel makes one of her 18 saves against Australia during their AFC Women’s Asian Cup Group A match at Perth Stadium.

BURSWOOD, Perth — The Australian Matildas were held to a solitary goal by the Philippine national women’s football team in front of a packed 60,000-strong crowd at Perth Stadium on Sunday, as Group A action opened in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

Returning star striker Sam Kerr delivered the decisive blow in the 14th minute, lifting Australia to the top of the group standings at the start of the continental showpiece.

After Kerr’s early strike, however, the Filipinas dug deep, frustrating the hosts for the remainder of the 95-minute contest with a disciplined defensive display.

“The defense was very organized. Very gritty. At times they made it difficult for us to break them down. They reduced the scoreline and got the result they needed,” said Matildas coach Joe Montemurro.

The Philippines’ backline stood firm in the first half, while goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel produced a string of crucial saves after the break to keep her side within reach and their qualification hopes alive in a campaign backed by the Philippine Football Federation and the Philippine Sports Commission.

“We’re disappointed that we lost the game. But for us, it was all about fighting until the end in every single match. I think you saw that today,” said Filipinas coach Mark Torcaso. “We didn’t get the outcome we wanted, but it’s important for us to keep pushing in the next two games.”

Kerr, playing her first major tournament since returning from injury last September, capitalized on a flowing move that began with penetration from Clare Wheeler down the flank. Wheeler’s cross into the box found Caitlin Foord, whose touch set up Kerr for a clinical finish past McDaniel’s outstretched right hand after slipping past defender Hali Long.

Australia threatened to double their advantage in the 29th minute when a long ball found Hayley Raso, whose volley ricocheted off McDaniel’s chest before crossing the line. The effort was ruled out, keeping the score at 1-0 heading into halftime.

The Matildas continued to press in the second half, earning a penalty in the 40th minute, but McDaniel denied Stephanie Catley with a superb two-handed save. She also thwarted Foord’s surging run from the left, aided by a timely disruption from Sofia Wunsch.

McDaniel tallied 18 saves in a resilient second-half stand that prevented the hosts from extending their lead.

Australia now look ahead to their next Group A fixture on Thursday, while the Filipinas shift their focus to a crucial clash against South Korea at Gold Coast Stadium as they seek to stay in contention for a quarterfinal berth.
