DPWH overhaul sought to curb corruption Department of Public Works and Highways (Businessworld / File)

MANILA, Philippines —  Demolition of deteriorated and substandard flood control projects along the Bagbag River in Calumpit, Bulacan has been started to pave the way for the rehabilitation of the structure.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said the demolition was in line with a directive of President Marcos to repair and replace weak and substandard flood control projects, to better protect communities from flooding.

Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon and Calumpit Mayor Glorime Faustino yesterday inspected ongoing reconstruction works in Barangay Calizon, where a 15-meter steel sheet pile is being installed for a new flood control structure.

Dizon said the project is part of a long-term solution to persistent flooding in the area.

Under the project, around 1,780 meters of old and dilapidated flood control structures in Calizon will be reconstructed and elevated to prevent water from inundating communities. — Rainier Allan Ronda
