Minority bloc aims to restore Senate dignity after chaos

Senator Risa Hontiveros said the minority bloc fully intends to contribute to restoring the people’s trust and hopes some members of the majority bloc would join their efforts to redeem the Senate’s integrity.

“Is there anything worse? We are already in the worst situation right now. So there should be no way to go, but up. Let’s be honest in the eyes of the people. Let’s focus again on the jobs that are needed now that the Middle East war continues, the oil crisis and the suffering of our countrymen in the midst of it,” said Hontiveros in a press briefing on Monday.

“Our jobs as senators continue. What I mentioned earlier, including the impeachment trial. We need to earn the trust, the full trust, of our countrymen again,” she added.

When asked if there is no certainty of leadership change, Hontiveros said “there will only be certainty when it is certain that the forces will act.”

“But as of now, at least I can assure you that the 11 (minority bloc) are solid. We are serious about our work and 100% committed to contributing to fixing the damaged reputation of the Senate,” the former deputy majority leader noted.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian also called for a restoration of the Senate’s dignity and credibility, highlighting the institution’s current struggles amid various controversies and viral incidents that have gained public attention.

He expressed concern that the public is more engaged with “dramas, memes, and funny videos,” which detracts from the Senate’s genuine work for the people.

Gatchalian emphasized the need to prioritize restoring the Senate’s image, acknowledging that regaining public trust and respect is a formidable challenge for lawmakers.

Senator Panfilo Lacson said earlier that Gatchalian has emerged as a consensus candidate for Senate president, garnering acceptance from both minority and some majority members.

He said the minority bloc’s support for Gatchalian reflects their belief that he could play a crucial role in rebuilding the Senate’s credibility.

Lacson revealed that their group of 11 senators solidified this decision during a recent caucus, branding Gatchalian’s nomination as a “non-negotiable” choice if there are to be changes in leadership.

This consensus reflects the minority bloc’s strategic alignment and focus on bolstering the Senate’s integrity through Gatchalian’s leadership.
