MANILA, Philippines — Independent animated musical “Plump Blossom” is set to premiere in Philippine cinemas, marking what its creators say is one of the country’s first AI-assisted animated feature films.
Written, produced, and directed by Kap Rossana, the film combines traditional filmmaking with artificial intelligence tools to bring its story to life. Despite using AI, the production team said the project required months of writing, directing, editing, and refining before it was completed.
It will hit Philippines screens on September 23.
“There were many days we honestly thought we would never cross the finish line,” Kap said. “Making this film was an uphill battle that tested our patience, creativity, and determination every single day.”
The filmmakers also addressed the misconception that AI can create a movie with minimal effort, saying the technology served only as a production tool while creative decisions remained in the hands of the team.
“AI didn’t make this movie. People did. AI was simply one of the many tools we used. The heart, the storytelling, the music, and every creative choice came from human hands,” Kap added.
Inspired by China’s Tang Dynasty, “Plump Blossom” follows the story of Princess Ruo Hua, whose kindness and courage guide her through the challenges she faces. The film is presented as a full-length animated musical.
The voice cast includes Candice Tan as Princess Ruo Hua, Don Puno as General Jian, Gutch Gutierrez as Chef Bao, Chad Williams as General Feathers, Thunderson Tan as Wen, Yeng Her as Yuan Yuan, and Audie Gemora as the Emperor. Singer-actress Paulina Yeung performs the songs featured in the film’s original soundtrack.
